Peace in our future
Pregnancy at Sunrise
Sometimes you just have to have some fun when creating maternity photos. A lot of moms joke about how big their bellies have become, and this time I asked if we could do something fun. She was more than willing to get a photo that would be a very non-traditional photo of her pregnancy.
This concept was based upon some photos I had seen of the sunrise over the earth from space. So with some careful lighting, a fair amount of Photoshop and mom who likes to have fun, this photo was created.
The final photo is a combination of four images. The belly and the moon are photos which I took, the space is from the Hubble telescope, and the sun flare is a Photoshop created image.
For your maternity photographs, imagination is the only limit. So talk with your photographer about any ideas you have no matter how “crazy” you think they might be.
Maternity Photographer in Phoenix Heat
This time of year here in Phoenix is especially tough on our pregnancy portrait clients. The heat is tough on everyone, but extra hard on those expecting.
I always tell my maternity clients to stay hydrated and help themselves to the bottled water in the refrigerator. I rather we take a few extra breaks to keep everyone comfortable. Of course I crank the AC down to make sure the studio is nice and cool too.
I don’t do outdoor shoots this time of year, it just isn’t safe. Too easy to overheat.
Retouches for Maternity
Many moms to be are concerned about showing their bellies during their maternity photography sessions. Stretch marks are the most common reason.
Not to worry. Retouching is part of are standard packages. This includes removing stretch marks so your belly will be picture perfect. Our experience shooting glamour for magazines comes through when we create your maternity portraits. Your pregnancy photos will be beautiful.
Heart Hands
One of the classic maternity photos is known as heart hands. Basically is the formation of a heart with your hands on your pregnant belly.
As you can see, it is possible to create a very well shaped heart with your hands. It does take some practice though. So go ahead and practice a bit in front of a mirror before you come in for your maternity photo session and when your photographer ask you to make a heart, you’ll be ready.
Classic B&W Belly
As you probably know by now I love the classic images when it comes to maternity photography. I guess somewhere in the photographer part of my brain I can’t not shoot some of these beautiful images when I have a pregnant woman in front of my camera.
Looking at this photo as inspired my next fun maternity photo. Soon as I get a chance you will see something I’ve never seen before. It’s going to be great. Don’t miss out.
The bellies have it.
As a maternity photographer, I know the key element of the photos will be the belly. The key is how to feature the belly in a photograph. I am always coming up with new ideas to make it fun. Over the next few weeks I hope to be showing a wide variety of traditional and very non-traditional maternity photos.
Hopefully this photos will give you some ideas for your maternity session with me. And just because you haven’t see a photo here, doesn’t mean I haven’t done it. I only show photos with permission, so there are lots of others ideas available.
I like to vary between black and white and color photographs for maternity. Both work well with this type of portrait. The great part about digital, is you can choose B&W or color after the maternity photos have been taken.
Silhouette Photos for Pregnancy
There are many styles of photos that are popular in maternity photography. One of my favorites is the silhouette. It is a unique way to show off that big belly. I use a variety of poses when creating these photographs. Often it is mom alone, but the image also works with others in the photo.
These photos make great art pieces to hang as a large canvas in the home. It is something a bit different and something that a lot of studios don’t create. Keep an eye for some new unique ideas I will be showing over the next few months. You never know what I’m going to try next to make unique maternity photographs.
Maternity photography – finding the light
Recently I had the chance to work with a wonderful woman on her maternity photographs. One of the things we wanted to do was to create some black and white (B&W) photos. For me the key to this type of photography is to use light and shadows to show off the features. Of course models understand how to work with lights, but as a photographer I need help my clients move to take advantage of the light.

Finding the light in maternity photos
Working with tiny adjustments to position to move how the light falls across the subject is key. Of course having done this for a while I know pretty close to where the pose needs to be to get the light how I want it.
The effect for my is very effective in maternity photographs. In the example above which I call “Thinking about the future”, she looks off into the distance as if she is looking toward the future. The light shows off her belly and it catches her cheek to bring the beauty of her face out from the shadows. I especially like the sparkle in her eye the light created.
As you view my portfolio you will see I tend to like a lot of shadow in my B&W pregnancy photos. I find the contrast really allows bring the photos into another place that would not be possible without the mystery of the shadows. Of course it could be from being in Phoenix where shadows are my summer friend that also makes me love shadows too.
