The love between a father and his son is a special bound. And what a better to celebrate Father’s Day than with this photo from one of my newborn photographer clients here in Phoenix.
Father and Son
I know this is a special Father’s day, as it is the first for the two of them together. His baby son at this young age is just cute as can be.
When Jessica Simpson showed a nude pregnancy photo on the cover of Elle, it created quite a stir in some cities. Here in Arizona, some stores in Tucson got complaints that it was obscene.
Jessica Simpson and Demi Moore Pregnant
It was the same pose that Demi Moore had done many years earlier on the cover of Vanity Fair. How is this anything but beautiful? This is a classic maternity pose that every good maternity photographer will provide for their clients who want it.
Don’t miss out on capturing the beauty of your pregnancy. You may not want to be as bold as these two, but we will always create some amazing memories.
February was the month for Maternity photos. I had a ton of pregnant moms come in for photos (no pun intended). It is always great to see the happiness these new babies are bringing the families.
Another thing I was happy to see was so many brought the dads and siblings in for some photos too. Nothings better than getting the family photo where everyone is in anticipation of the new child.
I had a great time photographing some twins for their 3 month shoot. I love to show off the size difference between the baby and the parent. Here is one of the twins showing off.
They will be back in 3 months for their 6 month shoot.
Sometimes you just have to have some fun when creating maternity photos. A lot of moms joke about how big their bellies have become, and this time I asked if we could do something fun. She was more than willing to get a photo that would be a very non-traditional photo of her pregnancy.
This concept was based upon some photos I had seen of the sunrise over the earth from space. So with some careful lighting, a fair amount of Photoshop and mom who likes to have fun, this photo was created.
Sunrise Over Pregnant Belly
The final photo is a combination of four images. The belly and the moon are photos which I took, the space is from the Hubble telescope, and the sun flare is a Photoshop created image.
For your maternity photographs, imagination is the only limit. So talk with your photographer about any ideas you have no matter how “crazy” you think they might be.
This time of year here in Phoenix is especially tough on our pregnancy portrait clients. The heat is tough on everyone, but extra hard on those expecting.
I always tell my maternity clients to stay hydrated and help themselves to the bottled water in the refrigerator. I rather we take a few extra breaks to keep everyone comfortable. Of course I crank the AC down to make sure the studio is nice and cool too.
I don’t do outdoor shoots this time of year, it just isn’t safe. Too easy to overheat.
Another beautiful newborn photo to show this week. Gotta love those beautiful eyes.
Beautiful Eyes Newborn
She is going to break a lot of hearts.
One of the classic maternity photos is known as heart hands. Basically is the formation of a heart with your hands on your pregnant belly.
Heart Hands for Maternity
As you can see, it is possible to create a very well shaped heart with your hands. It does take some practice though. So go ahead and practice a bit in front of a mirror before you come in for your maternity photo session and when your photographer ask you to make a heart, you’ll be ready.
One of the things that new parents enjoy is watching their newborn baby sleep. So of course some classic newborn photos always feature them sleeping. In fact getting wide eyed newborn photos is a challenge because the do sleep so much. So we like to advantage of the sleeping to get some cute photos.
Sleeping Baby Newborn
I really like black and white (B&W) photos of newborns. It makes for a pleasing tone and sets a very nice mood. New moms often worry about the blotchiness that their newborn often has, and B&W is a great way to conceal it. The end result is a beautiful baby photo.
I allow extra time for my newborn shoots so we can work around their schedules. From naps to meals to changing. Being a flexible photographer is the key to making this memorable photos.
This question is second only to when should I get my maternity photos? Ideally you want to get them in the first week to 10 days max. They grow so fast the first month. You want to capture just how tiny they were when they first arrived.
Newborns are always a challenge as they tend to live on their own schedules and moods. So I always allow plenty of time. No need to rush. Plenty of time for feeding and diaper breaks. And sometimes they just need to be held a bit to be comforted before the next shot.
Many parents decide to do an album to document the first year. Starting with the newborn photos and then every 3 months up to the first birthday. It becomes a keepsake that will be treasured for a lifetime.
Whatever you decide to do, the sooner the better for your newborn session. Like I mentioned before, ideally 10 days old is the maximum age for their newborn photo session.
