Maternity Photographer in Phoenix Heat
This time of year here in Phoenix is especially tough on our pregnancy portrait clients. The heat is tough on everyone, but extra hard on those expecting.
I always tell my maternity clients to stay hydrated and help themselves to the bottled water in the refrigerator. I rather we take a few extra breaks to keep everyone comfortable. Of course I crank the AC down to make sure the studio is nice and cool too.
I don’t do outdoor shoots this time of year, it just isn’t safe. Too easy to overheat.
Retouches for Maternity
Many moms to be are concerned about showing their bellies during their maternity photography sessions. Stretch marks are the most common reason.
Not to worry. Retouching is part of are standard packages. This includes removing stretch marks so your belly will be picture perfect. Our experience shooting glamour for magazines comes through when we create your maternity portraits. Your pregnancy photos will be beautiful.
The bellies have it.
As a maternity photographer, I know the key element of the photos will be the belly. The key is how to feature the belly in a photograph. I am always coming up with new ideas to make it fun. Over the next few weeks I hope to be showing a wide variety of traditional and very non-traditional maternity photos.
Hopefully this photos will give you some ideas for your maternity session with me. And just because you haven’t see a photo here, doesn’t mean I haven’t done it. I only show photos with permission, so there are lots of others ideas available.
I like to vary between black and white and color photographs for maternity. Both work well with this type of portrait. The great part about digital, is you can choose B&W or color after the maternity photos have been taken.
Silhouette Photos for Pregnancy
There are many styles of photos that are popular in maternity photography. One of my favorites is the silhouette. It is a unique way to show off that big belly. I use a variety of poses when creating these photographs. Often it is mom alone, but the image also works with others in the photo.
These photos make great art pieces to hang as a large canvas in the home. It is something a bit different and something that a lot of studios don’t create. Keep an eye for some new unique ideas I will be showing over the next few months. You never know what I’m going to try next to make unique maternity photographs.
When to get maternity photos
When should I schedule my maternity photo session is a question which I receive all the time. Pregnant moms want to know when to create the best photos. Since the photos are all about the bulging belly later is always better.
I don’t like to shoot them before 8 months pregnant. I have shot as late as a few days before due dates, but that is probably pushing things out a bit too far. Late in the 8th month is generally a really good time through early 9th month. I don’t like to schedule too close to due date as sometimes babies have a mind of their own and come a bit early.
So as your belly starts to grow, get your maternity session with the photographer scheduled and captures those memories.
Bulging Bellies
This week saw a lot of bulging bellies on the maternity photography clients. Each mom had her own style that I worked with to capture that perfect collection of photographs to remember her pregnancy. After all, my job as a photographer is to capture memories so they can last a lifetime.

Feel the kick in this B&W maternity photo
Everyone of the bellies I photographed this week was unique. Some moms worry about stretch marks on their growing bulge, but I tell them that retouching can remove them if they prefer. Retouching is include in all but one of our maternity photo packages.
Keeping your hands full
When of the best parts of my job is the longterm relationships than are often developed with my clients. Often I am first hired to be their boudoir photographer. Then they come back for their maternity photos. And shortly after that they will return for photos of their newborn baby.
These photos are typically taken within a week or two of the baby’s birth. The ideas is to capture how tiny they are as they grow so fast during the first few months.
I refer to this pose as the handful pose. It is one of several poses I like to use with newborns to show just how tiny they were. This time our little star was awake, but very often they are asleep for many of the photos. Of course everybody’s heart just melts when they see those cute sleeping little babies.
Of course they will continue to grow-up so much faster than you can imagine. Before long they will be graduating high school and need senior pictures. Then college and then kids of their own.
So be sure to capture all those special times as time will pass so quickly.
Family Portrait Maternity
Bringing a new baby into a family is always a special event. Remembering the pregnancy with the entire family is becoming a popular addition to maternity photo sessions. Sometimes its siblings, other times it is grandparents are brought into the shoot.
Typically the siblings arrive towards the end of the shoot after mom has gotten her solo photos taken. This allows mom to concentrate on creating great photos without having to worry about anything else.
There are as many options as there are families when it comes to creating the perfect maternity photo. We are always open to your ideas to help you make your photos a true reflection of you.
Little Feet
Shortly after maternity photography session a bundle of joy enters your world. And of course you will come back to get some great newborn photos. One of the fun things to do is to compare how tiny your newborn is as they grow so very fast.
